Immortality {A Tag}

REJECTED probably should have been the title of this blog post. BUT -- what can ya do? Just keep on trying :) I'm sharing a tag with you today that I had previously submitted for print to a magazine. Due to FULL FRONTAL NUDITY it has been rejected. 

It's cool.. it happens. it makes a little bit of sense. and it just gives me the opportunity to share it with you now! So here is my Immortality Among the Stars Tag -- you may sense a little bit of familiarity with this tag -- it was the inspiration for one of my pieces from the 31 days of stamping event. 

Mmm... sigh. I love this tag ♥ The base is a piece from my Lost and Found collection for 7 Dots Studio. I adore the line in all its vintage glory, and also because cutting a tag from those sheets requires very little manipulation to have a great background and or base.

I used my sewing machine to sew around the tag.. giving it a border of white and helping create a boundary. I really enjoy machine stitching on paper... two contrasting elements that work well together. I've used two stamps from Viva Las VegaStamps!. One designed by Mary Vogel Lozinak : Whimsical Tree Lady. The other by me : Film Strip. First I stamped the Film Strip on a scrap of white paper with Ranger Archival Ink... then I stamped the Whimsical Tree Lady twice.. once on the background of my tag in Ranger Archival Ink and embossed with WOW Embossing Powder, and then once on top of the film strip in Archival, making sure to mask off the reel holes of the strip.

The Tree Lady was then outlined in a Faber Castell / Design Memory Craft's Aquarelle Grip Watercolor pencil. I used a small paintbrush and some water to feather out the intensity of the pencil making a nice gradient of color around her. I trimmed out the film strip and popped it up using dimensional adhesive.

After the watercolor pencil was dry I used a PITT pen to draw circles around the girl, just adding a bit of contrast to the background while playing off the whimsy of her "hair." I also printed up a saying on some cardstock using my inkjet printer and glued it down with a UHU stick. The idea of the whole tag is that this beautiful voluptuous gal is forever immortalized in film.

And last but never least, the tag was finished off with a scatter of Star Confetti Chipboard from UmWowStudio. I left it in the natural raw kraft color to accent the vintage tones of the entire tag. I had a scrap of natural colored muslin laying on my desk that ended up being just the perfect touch to tie *pun intended* off my tag. Love when those little pieces fall together like that.

ZOOOOOMBIE

It is officially day 19 of the 31 days of stamping with Smeared and Smudged and I have gone a little bit SINISTER today........

The supplies for this baby are a bit limited but the overall feeling is creepTASTIC. The base is Canson watercolor paper. I first traced one of the seven Zombie Villagers by UmWowStudio in the background to give myself a guide. Then I created the deliciously dark and foreboding blackness using the Dictionary Page stamp from Viva Las VegaStamps! stamped over and over and over and over in Archival Ink by Ranger. 

Then the Zombie was covered in white paint and adhered with UHU. I used a Stabilo Marks All to darken the area just around the zombie a tad bit more. Then to give the piece a little more of a finished feel I drew a border around the postcard with a PITT pen. Really... that's about it. I might give this card a second go without the border.... he may seem even more scary just coming out of the darkness all by himself.

I Put A Spell On You {Art Journaling & Day 17}

It is the 17th... the 17th day of stamping for Smeared and Smudged. it is ALSO the 3rd Saturday of the month.. which means I have Art Journaling to teach tomorrow! I've been really wanted to show the girls one of my favorite watercolor techniques, and there was quite a bit of hype about the postcard I shared yesterday.. so today's piece and tomorrow's AJ page is a bit of a piggy back, but a good one if I say so myself. Except the empty spot at the top... not sure what to fill that with, yet.

Witchery Tag - Day 3

Whoop! Day 3 is under the hat.

Don't know what I'm talking about? Conveniently forgot? I'm participating in the Smeared and Smudged's 31 days of Halloween blog hop. there are PRIZES to be found, prizes to be WON, and tons of Halloweeny goodness abound.

Today I am sharing with you a fun, slightly whimsical, incredibly magical Witchery Tag.

The tag base comes from my Lost and Found line with 7 Dots Studio. It's a sheet of 12x12 diecut with Sizzix/Tim Holtz's #8 Tag Die. I can get four tags out of a single 12x12 sheet, so generally cut them down when I want one and then hang onto the extras for later purposes.. like this! I recently submitted a tag to RSM where I used the same Whimsical Tree Lady Nude from Viva Las VegaStamps!. After looking over my submission I thought she'd make a great witch!

She's been stamped in Archival black ink by Ranger and embossed in ultra shiny clear powder. It creates a great resist and raised surface to color against. I applied the purple color with Faber Castell's Aquarelle watercolor pencils. I colored around her in a gradient and then applied water with a water brush. 

Delish!!!! 

Because the paper got warped after my waterbrushing, I sewed it to a nice heavy piece of Canson watercolor paper using my machine and white thread. Fixed the paper right up AND gave me a much sturdier base to work on.

That gorgeous white fleck of pattern in the background is a thick layer of gesso through an UmWowStudio stencil titled Flurries. The stencil starts condensed at the top and disperses to just a splattering of shapes the further down it gets. Perfect for falling snow or star shine! I also wanted to create a moon effect without taking anything away from the tag... so I grabbed a bit of cheesecloth and gave it a quick soak in my homemade Instant coffee stain. I bunched it up and glued it down with Gel Medium. It felt like moon shine :) To finish off my moon that's not a moon, I hand trimmed a circle from some vintage book text. 

Last but certainly not least is the sentiment. WITCHERY comes from Tim Holtz's label alphas.. perfect to spell whatever I wanted and looks great in the stark black against the rest of the tag. Kokopelli Make n Take

This past weekend was one of the AWESOME Scrap Society crops where I am lucky enough to be continually invited to do the make n takes! The girls are so great with their crops -- full of fun, prizes, food, hilarity and they're all THEMED! September's happened to be WILD WEST themed and it was A HOOT! They're so great! They let me bring lots of UmWowStudio and Viva Las VegaStamps! to sell, too... so if you're local and looking to find some good stuff AND a great time... hit them up! Because I wasn't so sure how best to make something Wild West themed that EVERYONE could relate to.. I instead picked up a beautiful Kokopelli stamp from Viva Las VegaStamps! and created a sunset background. The background are made using Tim Holtz / Ranger Ink Distress Stain Sprays. For the first one I used Abandoned Coral, Wild Honey and Mustard Seed. Spray each in a line next to each other with a bit of overlap.. dry, spritz with water and dry again. It's finished with some book text circles, faber castell PITT pen doodling and the little chipboard star which is from the Christmas Confetti pack from UmWowStudio.

Since I demo to approximately 50 sweet ladies who attend the crop, I tend to try out the same techniques and products in slightly different layouts. Sometimes I change up color, or doodling, borders or dots. And here you can see the results! I love laying them all out together and seeing just how different each one ends up.

This one in the bottom left corner is a background that turned out slightly too dark for the stamp. So I figured out something else! no problem-o right? :)

Other Distress Stain Sprays used include Spiced Marmalade, Picked Raspberry, Seedless Preserves and Mermaid Lagoon. Some of the doodling has been done with a thicker pen, and sometimes I covered in the chipboard in the same ink I used to stamp in. (Archival ink by Ranger)

I was quite drawn to the one of the Coral and Raspberry mix..

as well as the Seedless preserves and Coral and Raspberry.

Which is your favorite? Or are there colors you might have chosen differently? PLUS! the stamp from VLVS is just KILLER to work with. It's so sweet and pretty. Really laid well over such gorgeous colors.

COURAGE - Art Journal Spread {Class | May}

I thought it would be a good day to recap our Art Journal class from this past weekend. It was officially our 2nd Art Journal class, moving up from tags, and it was wonderful. We're working on a bigger surface, with awesome products and just having a great time. I'll go over some of the products used, and show you the spread, but you'll have to JOIN ME during class for details and instructions ;)

I based the class off this recently finished double spread in my own journal :

We introduced watercolor paper and Faber Castell Gelatos.

Here you can see a vintage Card Catalogue Card, a stamp, thread, washi tape from Gauche Alchemy and a Movie ATC Background chip piece from UmWowStudio. The flower is Prima, and pen is Micron by Sakura of America.

Here is the Damask Mask from UmWowStudio, and some gorgeous eyelet lace from May Arts Ribbons.
