CONNECTED {Sustainable Souls January}

It's time to reveal some pretty exciting things happening this year..

I've joined a really great group of artists to bring forth an awareness of Planetary issues called The Sustainable Souls Project. Each month we'll be revealing some art pieces based on our views and feelings of various problematic issues.

January marks the start of our adventure and this month's theme is Connectedness.

I've worked up a trio of wooden panels in black and white with various layers of paint and texture, mark making, water and more.

My plan is for these pieces to be mounted to a larger backing (at a later date) and to have various forms of CONNECTION crossing them. You can see the start of my idea in patterns that cross from panel to another, color blocks that move across borders, and the awesome nails I've hammered into my pieces. Eventually a wire will stretch across the two boards from nail heads to nail heads. I've been on the lookout for some pieces that will really mean CONNECTION to me to finish this trio off.

PLANETARY CONNECTION in my heart simply means that all life forms are connected by a force, and it's important that we care about each and every one.. regardless of species, race, sexual orientation, heritage, economic standing or any other "dividing" factors. We are all part of this. together.

For now.. take a peek at my progress in the detail shots that follow, then pop on over to The Sustainable Souls Project blog to see the other amazing works.

She Flew {Art Journal Page}

I've always really dug inspirational bits in general. Along with that I love stamping and creating around the idea of "inspiration."

Whether it comes from a little boy in a super hero cape, a vintage girl with flowers in her hair, the sun rising, or a sandpiper in the shallows, I just love to stamp inspiration.

Well I also recently got to participate in an art journal swap with the amazing people at Chartpak. They do Grumbacher, Clearprint, Higgins and more. They sent out a beautiful little vellum book to travel the world and be filled with art.

Here's the page I contributed :

The base is a sheet directly from their vellum book. It's been covered with a layer of white gesso to prep it for some heavy mixed media goodness.

After the gesso was dry I added in some leftover book page circles I had from a previous art journal page. They've been applied to the gessoed vellum using fluid medium. There's also a few layers of tapes with different textures from the drywall section of your local hardware shop.

Layers and layers of Golden Fluid Acrylics and Glazing medium created this translucent layered effect. There's also a final little dusting of white gesso to balance out the harsh darkness of the page.

A bit of stamping from Viva Las VegaStamps! using the Butterfly Specimen and Invoice Waybill stamps I designed a while back. They're so perfect for background stamping.

The shining gem is this huge image transfer using Soft gel medium from Prima Marketing and the chipboard Cicada from UmWowStudio. The cicada has been covered in gesso for a nice raw texture. SHE FLEW is from some alphas by 7 Dots Studio. Everything has been adhered down with Heavy Gel medium or Fluid Medium.

I'm happy with the layers :)
